Announcing New Job Classifications to Make Searching for a GTA Job Easier!

TorontoJobClassifieds.com announced today the introduction of five new job classifications, to make searching for jobs on the website even easier. This brings the total number of classifications to 54. Having more job classifications helps job seeker better refine their searches.

The five new job posting classifications are:

Toronto Green Jobs: A classification whose time has come! Jobs that have anything to do with the environment, sustainability, green energy, waste reduction, pollution reduction, air or water quality and everything in between.

Toronto Domestic Help, Caregivers, and Personal Support Workers (PSWs): This is in response to job postings that did not quite fit our ECE & Childcare and Healthcare Jobs pages. Our editors found that some jobs in this classification were being posted in General Help and other broader categories. We felt that creating a more specific classification would be helpful to both job seekers and employers. Job postings in this classification will primarily be to work in a private home and may be posted by recruiters, health aid and caregiver recruitment agencies, or by private families.

Toronto Design Jobs: This job classification is in response to many requests to help refine searches that have anything to do with design work in the GTA. Jobs in this category might previously have been found anywhere from Arts & Entertainment, Communications, or Skilled Trades Job classifications. Design jobs posted under this classification area would include, graphic, interior and fashion design jobs, as well as some stylists, architects and engineers and tangential job opportunties in the various sectors of the design industry, for example, administrative, assisstive, and managerial positions.

Natural Resource Management, Mining & Extraction Jobs: Again, here is a bit of an amalgamation or various requests for a new classification to fit jobs in mining, oil & gas industry, forestry, and natural resources jobs. Clearly, some of these jobs will be to work outside of the GTA, thorought the province of Ontario, and indeed Canada-wide. Employers and recruiteres posting their free job ads in this category should speficy the work location; if the job is in the "Ontario" or "Out of Province" category, please remember to include the exact locale of the job in the body of the job description. Doing this will help to pre-screen your applicants to ensure they will be willing to work in your area.

Toronto Jobs for Internationally Trained and/or Experienced Workers: It is a common problem for new Canadians... not being able to find jobs in their career of choice, even when they have the requisite training or certification from a foreign land. This job classification is meant to assist both employers and job seekers; this search refinement will help to funnel individuals with skills and experience to jobs in their field where the employer does not require Canadian Training or perhaps experience. Without a job classification such as this it would be difficult to determine how important having Canadian experience would be to the employer. This classification would also be useful for those from Canada who gained work experience abroad.

While having a lot of job classifications can be a little overwhelming at first glance, it is apparent from our experience that having a variety of search refinements makes it ultimately easier for job seekers to find specific kinds of jobs. It also reduces the number of postings the job seeker will need to go through in each category.

Greater Toronto Area students interested in summer jobs with large Toronto area seasonal employers should start taking a look and applying for jobs now. Don't wait for reading week and March Break job fairs. You can jump ahead of the queue by applying for jobs online today with large employers like Club Link, Canada's Wonderland and Ontario Place.

Club Link, operates a network of high end golf clubs and resorts throughout Ontario and Quebec. According to their website, they hire about 4,000 Seasonal Employees.

Ontario Place, Toronto's landmark park on the lake says they have over 500 summer jobs to fill, their website states that they are "building a diverse team" of "First time job seekers, those looking for full time work during the months of May through to September, and those looking for work because they're retired and have too much free time!" Canada's Wonderland, the GTA's largest theme park's website states that they employ over 4,000 people at the Vaughan based amusement park, easily accessible by public transit, located near highway 400. CN Tower; this Toronto Landmark doesn't hire anywhere near as many summer workers as the other GTA tourist attractions mentioned above, however they do have seasonal opportunities posted on their website today for admissions cashiers, retail sales associates, hosting and security jobs. Still Jobs in Toronto as U.S. Posts Worst Job Losses in 16 Years

The U.S. Labour department reported Friday that more than half a million Americans lost their jobs in December, while this was not quite as bad as expected, it is still the worst decline in 16 years.

Reuters quotes, Richard Yamarone, chief economist at Argus Research in New York as saying "The job situation is ugly and is going to get uglier. There's no reason to expect hiring anytime in the next three to six months. We are not going to see any hiring until the government steps in and acts. Talk doesn't work," said .

The stunning job losses were predominantly in the service-business sector.

Rise and shine sleepy heads! It is January 5th and that means most of my young friends are back to school after their winter holiday break.

So shake the cobwebs from your brains kids... Time to hit the books!

This is also your wake-up call to start looking for your summer job. Yes, your education comes first and foremost, but hey, if you are paying tuition or will be heading of to college of university in the fall you are going to need a decent summer job. There is a lot of doom and gloom out there with respect to the economy, don't wait until spring to compete for the few remaining Toronto area jobs that may be available.

Deadlines are fast approaching for some of the Greater Toronto Area's top municipal summer employers, including:

City of Mississauga: accepting online applications until January 15, 2009

City of Toronto: Deadline for Summer jobs February 14, 2009 - jobs broken down by regions of Etobicoke York, North York, Toronto East York (includes downtown), and Scarborough

City of Vaughan: Currently accepting applications from College and University students for Office Workers, Labourers and Tech Support jobs. Also check out jobs with the Vaughan Recreation and Culture Department which should also be open to high school students. If you are looking for a job, or planning to look for a job, chances are you've been working on your resume. If you haven't, you had better start! Having an effective resume is your first foot in the door with an employer. Today, with all of the resources available to job seekers to help create great resumes and cover letters, it is imperative that your resume looks professional and contain pertinent information for the recruiter or employer reviewing the document.

You have a choice to make: Create the resume yourself or pay for a professional resume.

If you wish to create your own resume there are lots of online and offline resources available to you. If you aren't sure what you are doing you really should check some of these out. For example the Toronto Job Seeker Resources Page provides links to many online sources of information. For those of you in the GTA who are unemployed there are many government funded services you can access for resume and job search help, you can search them out at: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/tcu/search.html

I recently came across a resume writing service website that offers some interesting free resources. Best Choice 4 Resumes is based in Waterloo, ON and offers solid free resume examples on their website. If you are new to writing resumes (or never really understood what you were doing when you prepared your last one) they also offer some good, straight-forward articles you can read on their site. Best Choice also offer a free resume critique and a free newsletter which you may subscribe to. I haven't used the service, but I like the website and suggest taking a look.

It is Easy Being GREEN

Online businesses are by their very nature "Green". There is a way to go greener, though. Company's can buy carbon credits or purchase services from carbon neutral companies. On the web, this could mean a carbon-neutral hosting provider, such as Host Papa, that offers 100% Green Energy webhosting.

You are "greener" too, just by visiting online classifieds websites, you are saving paper, rather than using traditional newspaper and tabloid classifieds printed on paper. Hey, papers are a great way to advertise but lets face it, most of what you get in that paper doesn't apply to you, and when you are done with it, it is waste. Online advertisements are published once and typically stay 'live' longer than paper based ads, which need to be reprinted to match the term of online ads, with papers coming out on a daily or weekly basis. (Incidentally, if you do pick up a newspaper or one of the many free adzines from the boxes scattered throughout the GTA, please remember to recycle!).

Our Green Strategies -- Try them for Yourself!

At our office the staff have the luxury of 'telecommuting' to work, that is they work remotely utilizing telephone and internet to communicate, thereby reducing carbon emissions (and traffic-- your welcome!) caused by driving to work.

Paperless Invoicing is another great strategy for reducing waste, therefore, to the greatest extent we can, we use email invoicing. Further to that almost all of our other communications are via email, eliminating the waste of paper-based correspondence.

We reuse, then recycle our paper. That's right! One-sided junk mail and office misprints are cut-up for note pads. When we're done, its into the blue box for recycling.

We wear sweaters! Don't laugh, by keeping the office a couple of degrees cooler in the winter, we are able to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions--every little bit helps! We also keep the lights off as much as possible, we are fortunate to have a big window in our little office!

Money for Skills Training in Ontario

According to Ontario Workforce Shortage Coalition, there is a shortage of skilled labour in Ontario and the challenges will intensify in the years ahead. The organization expects Ontario will be short more than 360,000
skilled employees by 2025.

The Government of Canada announced in February that they will invest nearly $1.2 billion in Ontario's labour market over the next six years to help bridge the skills gap. The program, referred to as the Canada-Ontario Labour Market Agreement (LMA) begins April 1, 2008 with $194 million to get things started. This is part of a nation-wide campaign that will see $500 million distributed per year over the next six year. Funds will be allocated to the provinces and territories on an equal per capita basis.

These funds will help individuals and workers who are not eligible for training under the Employment Insurance (EI) program to improve their skills. The funding will also help individuals too often excluded from the labour force, including Aboriginal people, immigrants, persons with disabilities, as well as those workers who lack literacy and essential skills, get the training they need to obtain meaningful and sustainable employment.

The Ontario Governement will direct the funding in the areas of Technical skills training, labour market integration of immigrants, foundation skills training and supports (literacy and basic trade skills for example), and labour market supports for persons with disabilities.

While neither the Federal or Provinical government media releases on the new Labour Market Agreement indicate just how YOU can access these funds to develop your skills, there are a couple of quick ways you can take a look into it as the fund will likely be filtered into existing services already being delivered by the province under the old agreement.

You can also call the Employment Ontario Hotline at 1-800-387-5656 or in Toronto 416-325-4084. I spoke with a counselor at the Employment Ontario Hotline who indicated that most programmes currently being offered are for youth and those currently collecting Employment Insurance (EI). As mentioned above, the new LMA will increase the scope to include others, but will not take effect until April 1st, and it is still not precisely clear how these resources will be distributed or who will be able to access them.

A couple more GTA Nursing and health care jobs fairs to report on.

Southlake hospital in Newmarket is holding a career fair February 29 and March 1st.

St. Mikes Hospital downtown is holding their nursing career fair for RNs and RPNs March 1st.

March 3rd there is a Career Expo at the Holiday Inn on King (downtown) which will target health care workers as well as technology and other professionals.

There seems to be a constant and ongoing need for nurses and health care professionals in the Greater Toronto Area. In-home healthcare providers are currently hiring nurses and service workers to provide health care services to individuals in need of personal care outside of the hospital environment.
